Dress to Impress: What to Wear on Camera for Your Next Video Shoot
When you're getting dressed for your next video shoot, choose carefully. Your outfit should be true to you and reflect your personality — but it shouldn't distract from the point of the video. How do you strike the right balance?
Best clothes to wear on camera
The best clothes depend on what the video is about and what your company or producer is trying to convey. In general, the rules that apply to interviews apply on camera: clean, wrinkle-free, and appropriate for the setting.
Unless your video is about fashion, design, or another art form, go traditional — suits, solid colors, collared shirts. If you're an artist being interviewed about your work, you can play a little more. At the end of the day, your clothes should further your message, not distract from it.
Best colors to wear on camera
More important than style is color. Colors can read very differently on video and can distract from your message.
- Solid colors are best. Large prints are distracting, and busy patterns can shimmer on camera.
- Avoid super-bright colors like bright white or bright red — on video they can shift and change the tone of the whole piece.
- Warm neutrals win: browns, maroons, and blues.
- Careful with green — especially if a green screen is anywhere in the plan.
Whatever you choose, bring a couple of outfit options to the shoot. You won't have to worry about a coffee spill, and if a color isn't working on screen, you can change right there.
The setup matters as much as the wardrobe
The clothes have an impact, but the camera setup, lighting, and direction play the bigger role. Transcendent Enterprise handles all of it — so you can focus on the message, not the monitor.
